Wines of South Africa Grandtasting rising to new heights

5 February 2013

LUANDA- ANGOLA, 24 JANUARY 2013

The Origami Terrace on second floor of the newly built Five Star Epic Sana Hotel overlooking the city of Luanda, Angola was packed with guests from trade, media and consumers that attended the 3rdWines of South Africa Grand tasting.

The event started at 18:00 - 22:00 where guests were treated to canapés and over 150 different South African wines poured while soft contemporary jazz and Angola sounds kept the guests entertained. For all it was a great moment to see such good attendance of importers, distributors, media and consumers especially a day after the CAF Africa Cup of Nations game between South Africa and Angola. South Africa won 2-0 Angola.

Looking back I was reminded of our first, unsuccessful event, but today with perseverance and better understaAnchornding of the market we have created a South African event that is now so recognized in Angola that the trade, media and consumers look forward to every year.

Our strategic partnership with stakeholders such as the South African Embassy in Luanda and South African Airways is a collective approach in fast-tracking visibility of brand South Africa in the Angola market, and  very significant in  growing footprint of South African business and commitment to the African continent.

Angola is an important export wine market for South African showing growth, with exports of 4 355 531 million litres in Jan-Dec 2011, up 28% in Jan-Dec 2012, to 5 572 395 million litres, with sparkling wine making up 4 431 653 million litres of the total exports.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IDENTIFIED FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE PRODUCERS AT THIS EVENT AND THE ANGOLA MARKET.

In building-up to the event WOSA worked in consultation with importers and country managers of wineries that export to Angola and most of the importers that attended the show expressed keen interest to grow their portfolios with South African brands. The lineup of brands that were in the section of those looking for representation was well received and the guests were excited by the quality of wines presented.

We are confident that our efforts will result in increase of South African wine exports into the Angola market. Today I got a call from a Portuguese importer who had seen the event on Portuguese TV, and traced me down as he is keen to expand his wine business into Angola, with a South African portfolio.
